Distinguished and Famous people from Mareeba
🌾 Thomas Vernon Gilmore
Thomas Vernon Gilmore built his Mareeba association through farming and politics. He and his brother bought land at Emerald Creek in 1931 and planted tobacco after clearing a small area with hand tools and a tree puller. Crop failures and disease made the early years precarious. Gilmore later worked with tobacco growers’ organisations and represented the district in federal and Queensland politics. His community activities also included rodeo work and announcing. The family history preserves a life in which farming, public representation and local events repeatedly overlapped, rather than following separate career tracks.
🏛️ Tom Gilmore
Tom Gilmore, the younger member of the political family, was born in Mareeba and attended Emerald Creek and Mareeba state schools. Farming came before a long public career: he grew tobacco and later diversified into other crops, cattle and property development. He entered Mareeba Shire Council in 1982, won the state seat of Tablelands in 1986 and served as a Queensland minister. Later mayoral roles spanned the amalgamated Tablelands council and the restored Mareeba Shire. His career therefore followed the district through major changes in both its industries and the organisation of local government.
